AT PICTURESQUE LOCALES IN THE U.S. & AROUND THE GLOBE
Don't go for the easy story.
Find something that challenges you, that scares you.
—Lois Raimondo, photographer
14 | You'll leap out of bed before the sun rises, tromp through prickly brush, battle bugs,
straddle fences, and carry about 20 pounds of gear. If you're serious about photography, you're
guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Photography and vacations have gone together since 1900 when George Eastman first in-
troduced the Brownie camera. Costing a mere one dollar (plus 15 cents for film), the simple
box with the easy-to-load film rolls opened the mysterious world of photography to everyday
people, who immediately began trotting around the globe documenting their travels.
Today, thousands of photography workshops are available for honing your travel-doc-
umenting skills. Whether you want pointers on the best angle for capturing a red-breasted
sapsucker, advice on how to shoot a sunset over the Grand Canyon, or simple tips for getting
your teenager to say “Cheese,” a photography vacation is the way to go.
Needless to say, photography vacations are staged in places with dramatic scenery and
light. The views alone should be enough to convince you. However, here are four more reasons
to sign up for a photography vacation.
1. Good company. It takes time to set up a good shot, and nothing is more annoying
than a traveling companion in a rush: “Okay, honey, we've seen that. Let's get out of
here.” There's something to be said for hanging out with other shutterbugs.
2. Total immersion. From the treasured light of dawn until well after darkroom dark,
you get the chance to look at life through the lens of your camera.
3. New technical skills. No matter how many frames you've shot and processed, there
is always something new to learn. Photo vacations are guaranteed to open your eyes
to new ways of seeing.
