room. At one time, Peters Valley was known as the vegetarian crafts school (there was even a
book, The Artists Table: Recipes from the Peters Valley Kitchen, touting its famous recipes),
but it has since added meat.
As far as the Delaware Water Gap goes, this steep and wooded valley straddling New
Jersey and Pennsylvania is dramatic and beauitful, offering everything from camping, hiking,
and biking to boating, canoeing, and fishing. For classic hilltop views, you have no choice
but to climb—follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail from Lenape Lake parking area in
the town of Delaware Water Gap, for instance, to reach the crest of 1,463-foot Mount Min-
si; or tackle the rocky 1.5-mile round-trip Red Dot Trail, from the I-80 rest area east of the
Kittatinny Point visitor center, to reach the spectacular 1,545-foot sumit of Mount Tammany
in New Jersey. Other gap highlights include Sunfish Pond in New Jersey, a glacially carved
basin that's a popular swimming hole; Dingmans Falls on the Pennsylvania side, where a
series of boardwalks takes you through ravines of rhododendron and ancient hemlocks to
waterfalls; and the Pocono Environmental Education Center, housed in a former honeymoon
hotel.
Classes at Peters Valley run mid-May through mid-September and culminate with a huge
arts-and-crafts fair of 150 juried craftspeople selling their work. Tuition ranges from $250 for
a two-day class to $450 for a five-day workshop. Accommodations are from $40 a night for
a shared dorm room (a reservation is required for linen rental at $10 per workshop stay) to
$110 per night single for a motel-style room that includes linens, towels, and a private bath.
Meal plans range from $41 for the two-day workshops to $122 for the five-day classes.
