KYRENIA WEST
Lapta (Lapithos)
Surrounded by verdant citrus orchards, the sprawling village of Lapta is a popular day trip
from Kyrenia. Although the surrounding area has been gobbled up by bland holiday home
complexes, the old district, running up the slope away from the coastline, still boasts green
leafy lanes and some traditional charm.
Lapta was one of the original city kingdoms of Cyprus and a regional capital under Ro-
man rule. Its abundant water supply and protected position have made it a favourite choice
of foreign rulers and settlers for centuries.
A mixed village pre-1974, Lapta accommodated Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in
harmony, until the skirmishes of the 1960s saw a mosque's bell tower spoiled in the wake
of local differences. In the mid-1990s, forest fires devastated much of the region but fortu-
nately missed this town. Today the village is populated by a blend of expats, mainland
Turks and Turkish Cypriot villagers.
