STREET WISE
North Nicosia is a safe city at any time of the day, and you should feel no concern about walking the streets.
At night, the Old City can seem uncomfortably quiet, especially for urban folk, and visitors may feel intimid-
ated walking alone along dimly lit and often narrow streets. It's best to avoid them if you feel uncomfortable. The
areas abutting the Green Line look threatening, with large black-and-red signs that clearly forbid photography or
trespassing in the buffer zone.
Do not take photographs on the Roccas (Kaytazağa) Bastion, at the western end of the Old City limits, where
you can still look over into Greek Nicosia (Lefkosia). Despite the loosening of the border-crossing laws, the buf-
fer zone is still a military area. Watchful soldiers stationed not so obviously on the bastion may confront you and
confiscate your camera.
MONEY
You can change your money into Turkish lira (TL) at any of the money-changing facilities
just past the passport-control booth at both the Ledra Palace Hotel and Ledra St crossings.
