bream, red snapper and red mullet, served with freshly made (rather than frozen) chips.
The homemade desserts are good too, opt for the deliciously moist carrot cake if it's on
offer. Kanali is well signposted from the centre of town, located above the small harbour.

A sound informal eating option located on the coastal road at the far side of town. Head
for the outside terrace shaded by pomegranate trees and enjoy a classic seafood menu with
an emphasis on the catch of the day.
Pahyammos
Located just 5km east of Pomos along a lovely stretch of highway flanked by colourful
oleander bushes, Pahyammos means 'broad sand'. Its beach is indeed broad and sweeps
around a large bay up to the UN watchtowers that mark the beginning of Kokkina, a Turk-
ish Cypriot enclave.
The beach is made up of darkish sand and there's no natural shade, but the swimming is
reasonable. There are no facilities on the beach, but there are one or two places to eat in
the town, which is strung out along the main through-road.
Kokkina (Erenköy)
Tylliria really felt the pinch when it was partly isolated from the rest of Cyprus following
the Turkish invasion in 1974. Since that time, this small Turkish enclave, known in Greek
as Kokkina and in Turkish as Erenköy, has been surrounded by Greek Cypriot territory.
Don't risk driving off the road trying to spot the place; it's hidden behind mountains and
guarded by a couple of UN and Greek Cypriot army lookout points, with signposts forbid-
ding photography.
Kato Pyrgos

This remote beach resort is as far out of the way as you can get in the Republic, yet it at-
tracts a regular summer clientele of Cypriots who come for its laid-back ambience. Don't
expect palm-fringed promenades and white sandy beaches; Kato Pyrgos has a mildly
shabby, old-fashioned appeal, and many Cypriots come here just to get away from the
