Lagos to Sagres
To the west of Lagos, the coastline is sharp and ragged, and much less developed, though
the area is certainly not undiscovered. Once-sleepy fishing villages set above long beaches
have now woken up to the benefits of tourism and, in some cases, developers have moved
in. Out of the high season, these places remain bewitchingly calm.
Luz
Six kilometres west of Lagos, the small resort of Luz is packed with Brits. It's fronted by
a sandy beach that's ideal for families. Most accommodation is prebooked by those on a
package deal. Luz is a convenient side trip from Lagos. Buses run frequently from Lagos
(around €2, 15 minutes) and arrive by the village church on the waterfront.

If there's only one reason to visit Luz (dare we stretch it to the Algarve), it's to dine at

. Both the owner, Chicca, and the cuisine have
big personalities (think Nigella Lawson); her presentation of the dishes - all her creations
- are as full-on as the treats themselves. All ingredients are organic, all are imaginatively
combined, and all are superb. Think savoury bread-and-butter pudding, vegetable stacks
(and other vegie options), amazing salads, fish and meats, and
the
best desserts (don't
miss the white-chocolate-and-raspberry tart) and cakes. Come with time and an empty
stomach. You can always work off the calories by walking back along the cliff track
between Luz and Lagos.
