The Berkeley Hills form a
backdrop to this half-timbered
fairytale castle. Construction
began in 1906, and ended in
1915. In the early years the
hotel failed to prosper, due
partly to a law that forbade
the sale of alcohol within
a 1-mile (1.6-km) radius
of the Berkeley university
campus. An enterprising
student actually measured the
distance in 1937, and found
that the radius line passed
through the center of the
building. This revelation led
to the founding of the Terrace
Bar, which is now known as
The Paragon, beyond the
radius line.
As well as being one of the
Bay Area's plushest hotels,
this is a good place to have
a drink and enjoy the views.
More than 12,000 species from
all over the world thrive at
Berkeley's Strawberry Canyon.
Collections are arranged in
thematic gardens linked
by paths. Particularly
noteworthy are the
Asian, African, South
American, European,
and California gardens.
The Chinese medicinal
herb garden, orchid display,
cactus garden, and the
carnivorous plants are also
well worth a visit.

Avenue
Berkeley. @ AC Transit 1.
Berkeley's most stimulating
street runs between Dwight Way
and the University. Telegraph
Avenue has one of the highest
concentrations of bookstores in
the country, and many coffee
houses and cheap eateries. This
district was the center of student
protest in the 1960s. Today
it swarms with students from
dawn to long after dusk, along
with street vendors, musicians,
protestors, and eccentrics.
