stress when N deficiency occurs. Physiological responses of N-stressed cotton were similar to those
encountered with water stress (Radin and Mauney, 1986). Similar to water stress, N stress decreases
stomatal and mesophyll conductance of CO 2 (Radin and Ackerson, 1981), decreases hydraulic con-
ductivity, that is, water uptake and transport in the plant (Radin and Parker, 1979; Radin and Boyer,
