Diving sites include such tantalising areas as the waters off the coast at Paestum, where
- who knows? - you may just come across your very own bronze Apollo.
Eating & Drinking
PIZZA
Anna €
( 0974 82 37 63; Lungomare San Marco 32; meals from €15, pizzas from €3) At the
city-centre end of the promenade, this has been a locals' favourite for decades. Family
run, with a small B&B upstairs, Anna is best known for its pizzas, especially since a Brit-
ish Sunday broadsheet named Anna's Sorpresa the best pizza in Italy back in May 2010.
It is certainly well worth the €10 tag, with a seven-slice selection including mussels, au-
bergines, courgettes, marinated pork, ham, prawns and spicy sausage.
More traditional seafood dishes include grilled swordfish. This is also a good place for
an energy-stoking sugar start to the day, with more than eight types of cornetti to choose
from, including white chocolate.
Bar Gelateria del Corso €
(Corso Garibaldi 22-24; ice creams from €2, cakes from €1.50, cocktails from €2.50) The
most popular spot in town for slurping an ice cream, sipping a cocktail or salivating over a
cream cake. Comfortable wicker chairs are ideally positioned for people watching on this
pedestrian shopping street. If ice cream is your weakness, there are some unusual fla-
vours, including marrón glace (candied chestnut) and limone sicilia (Sicilian lemon), plus
yoghurt-based choices such as frutti di bosco (fruit of the forest).
BAR
U'Sghiz €
( 0974 82 93 31; Piazza Umberto 1; meals €15, pizzas from €3) Enjoying a prime
centro storico position, the rambling dining rooms in this 17th-century building include
the upstairs Sala degli Affreschi, complete with mural of jovial owner Antonio (plus fam-
ily) rendered in Greek mythological style. There is also an alfresco terrace. The house
speciality is seafood, with dishes such as spaghetti a vongole and an extensive pizza
choice.
A quarter carafe of house red wine costs a mere €2 but is better for pickling grandma
(sorry, onions); go for one of the marginally more expensive choices instead.
