At the time of research,
the future of Naples' once-wonderful contemporary art museum was undecided. Its 'His-
torical Collection' of modern painting, photography, sculpture and installations from
greats such as Mario Merz, Damien Hirst and Olafur Eliasson was closed indefinitely,
with only its specially commissioned, 1st-floor installations on display. Inspired by
Naples, these installations include works by Francesco Clemente, Anish Kapoor, Rebecca
Horn, and Jeff Koons.

Splendid baroque architecture meets religiously
themed art at the revamped Chiesa di Santa Maria Donnaregina Nuova. Now known as
the Diocesan Museum of Naples, its collection spans Renaissance triptychs and 19th-cen-
tury wooden sculptures, to works from baroque masters including Luca Giordano, Fabriz-
io Santafede and Andrea Vaccaro.
Collection highlights include Giordano's final canvases, which hang on either side of
the church's main altar, Paolo De Matteis'
San Sebastiano Curato dalle Pie Donne
(St Se-
bastian Attended to by the Pious Women) and a young Francesco Solimena's fresco
Il
Miracolo delle Rose di San Francesco
(The Miracle of the Roses of St Francis), above the
church's presbytery.
On weekends in April and May, the museum usually hosts
