Mercato di Porta Nolana

(Porta Nolana; 8am-6pm Mon-Sat, to 2pm Sun; R2 to Corso Umberto I) Bellies
rumble greedily at this colourful street market, one of the city's best. The market's name-
sake is medieval city gate Porta Nolana , which stands at the head of Via Sopramuro. Its
two cylindrical towers, optimistically named Faith and Hope, support an arch decorated
with a bas-relief of Ferdinand I of Aragon on horseback.
Below and beyond it, the mercato is an intoxicating place, where bellowing fishmon-
gers and frutti vendoli (greengrocers) collide with fragrant delis, bakeries, and a growing
number of ethnic food shops. Expect to find anything from buxom tomatoes and mozza-
rella to crunchy casareccio bread, cheap luggage and bootleg '80s compilation CDs.

great art works to grace the Neapolitan Renaissance - the majestic tomb of Cardinal Bran-
caccio, the church's founder. Although considered a part of Naples' artistic heritage, the
sarcophagus was actually sculpted in Pisa by Donatello, Michelozzo and Pagno di Lapo
Partigiani. Taking a year to complete, the sculptured marvel was shipped to Naples in
1427.

iesa dei Girolamini features two facades; the more-imposing 18th-century option can be
admired from Piazza dei Girolamini on Via dei Tribunali. The real highlights, however,
are next door in the 17th-century convent. The first is the beautiful main cloister , com-
plete with faded majolica tiles. The second is the upstairs art gallery , featuring local
greats like Luca Giordano, Battista Caracciolo and Giuseppe de Ribera.
