Ankara to Kars Across the Steppe
This journey takes you to northeastern Anatolia's stun-
ning plateaus and peaks. The area is a long way from
western Turkey's tourist territory, and this itinerary re-
quires a little adventurous spirit. However, the trip is
doable by both car and Turkey's comfortable buses, with
plenty of good hotels and restaurants along the way.

The capital is a convenient hub for central Turkey, with flights from İstanbul and buses
travelling far and wide from its huge otogar (bus station). While here, hop on the metro to
Ulus and see the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations , displaying finds from Anatolia's
many significant archaeological sites. Staying overnight here is not as awful as İstanbullus
will tell you: Kızılay's cafe culture shows modern Turkey at its vibrant best.

One of two restored Ottoman towns within a few hours' drive of Ankara (Safranbolu is the
other), Amasya is a handy staging post en route to northeastern Anatolia. With
gingerbread-like Ottoman houses on one side of the Yeşilırmak River and mosques and
museums on the other, Amasya's setting is superb. Above its minarets looms a rocky bluff,
carved with Pontic tombs and crowned by lofty Harşena Castle .
