Eastern Anatolia Itineraries
With exotic cities and ruins, mountain ranges and wind-
blown steppe, eastern Anatolia is completely diferent
from western Turkey. Don't try to see it all, but plan a
doable route, and you will have a rewarding trip.
SUMELA MONASTERY TO ANI Mountains & Steppe
This tour of northeastern Anatolia's lyrical ruins and landscape begins at the Byzantine (1)
Sumela Monastery , which clings to a cliff face above a forested valley. Approach on foot
and appreciate the external views. Base yourself in nearby (2) Trabzon , which shows the
Black Sea region's contemporary side on its buzzing main square and winding bazaar
streets.
Next, just a few hours' journey along the coast are the (3) Kaçkar Mountains , a bucol-
ic area of yaylalar and snowy peaks. White-water rafters may prefer Yusufeli, but twee Ay-
der arguably has more accessible alpine scenery. With your own car, drive up the Fırtına
Valley, with its castle and Ottoman humpback bridges.
