On the Deep Blue Sea
A four-day, three-night cruise on a
gület
(traditional wooden yacht) along the Turquoise Coast - known locally as a
'blue voyage'
(mavi yolculuk)
- is a trip highlight for many people. On the usual Fethiye-Olympos route, the
Demre-Olympos leg of the journey is by bus (1¼ hours). From Fethiye, boats usually call in at Ölüdeniz and But-
terfly Valley and stop at Kaş, Kalkan and/or Kekova, with the final night at Gökkaya Bay opposite the eastern end
of Kekova. A less common (but some say prettier) route is Marmaris-Fethiye.
Food is usually included; you sometimes have to pay for water and soft drinks. Boats usually have between six
and eight smallish but comfortable double and triple cabins. Most people sleep on mattresses on deck as the boats
are not air-conditioned.
Boats depart at least daily between late April and October. The price is usually between €165 and €195 (up to
€275 in midsummer). Take the usual precautions to avoid being fleeced: shop around, get recommendations, avoid
touts, only deal with local agencies, don't necessarily pick the cheapest option (the crew may skimp on food and
services), check out your boat and ask to see the guest list, ignore gimmicks such as free water sports, and book well
ahead year-round.
