Bus
İzmir's otogar lies 6.5km northeast of the city centre. For travel on Friday or Saturday to
coastal towns to the north of İzmir, buy your ticket at least a day in advance. The bus
companies' city-centre offices are mostly found at Dokuz Eylül Meydanı. Servises shuttle
passengers between these offices and the otogar.
Services, generally hourly, include Ankara ( " 40, eight hours), Antalya ( " 45, seven hours),
Bergama ( " 10, two hours), Bodrum ( " 25, 3¼ hours), Bursa ( " 25, five hours), Çanakkale
( " 35, six hours), Denizli (for Pamukkale, " 25, 3¼ hours), İstanbul ( " 45, nine hours), Kuşa-
dası ( " 15, 1¼ hours), Marmaris (for Datça and Bozburun Peninsulas, " 38, four hours) and
Selçuk ( " 9, one hour).
Train
Most intercity services arrive at Basmane Garı. There are daily trains to/from Selçuk
( " 4.75, 1½ hours), Bandırma (coordinating with ferry to/from İstanbul, " 18, six hours) and
Ankara ( " 27, 15 hours) via Eskişehir.
Getting Around
To/From the Airport
The airport is 18km south of the city on the way to Ephesus and Kuşadası.
Hourly Havaş buses ( " 10, 30 minutes) leave from Gazi Osman Paşa Bulvarı near the
Swissôtel between 3.30am and 11.30pm, and run to the Swissôtel from domestic arrivals,
leaving 25 minutes after flights arrive.
Boat
The most pleasant way to cross İzmir is by ferry ( 6.40am-11.40pm) . Roughly half-
hourly timetabled services, with more at the beginning and end of the working day, link
the piers at Karşiyaka, Bayraklı, Alsancak, Pasaport, Konak and Göztepe. Jetons (trans-
port tokens) cost " 3 each.
