Detour:
Edirne
Tucked away in the northwest corner of the country, Edirne is a small, dreamy city with magnificent Ottoman archi-
tecture and an old Roman district. The city is close to the Greek and Bulgarian borders, giving this 14th-century Ot-
toman capital a lively, frontier-town feel.
Ottoman mosques dot the centre, most notably the 16th-century Selimiye Camii (Selimiye Mosque; Mimar
Sinan Caddesi) , one of Turkey's finest mosques, designed by the great architect Mimar Sinan. The mosque is
smaller but more elegant than Sinan's Süleymaniye Camii in İstanbul, and it is said that he considered this his finest
work. Lit up at night, the complex is a spectacular sight with its two medreses (seminaries).
Most of Edirne's budget and midrange hotels are on Maarif Caddesi, including Efe Hotel ( 0284-213 6166;
www.efehotel.com ; Maarif Caddesi 13; s/d " 100/150; ) . Beyond its atmospheric, archival lobby with
tartan carpets and polished wood, the small rooms have chaotic retro patterns, heavy furniture and soft lighting.
The city's dish of choice is Edirne ciğeri (thinly sliced deep-fried calf's liver, served with crispy fried red chillies
and yoghurt) and the most interesting cafe is Melek Anne ('Angel' Anne's; 0284-213 3263; Maarif Caddesi
18; mains " 7) , popular with students and foodies. The 120-year-old house serves a rotating menu of homemade
dishes, including unusual salads and hearty vegetarian choices.
Regular bus services to/from Edirne include Çanakkale ( " 30, four hours) and İstanbul ( " 12, 2½ hours). Demand
for İstanbul is high so book ahead.
Taxi
Drivers in Eceabat will run you around the main sites for about " 120, but they take only
two to 2½ hours.
