governance. Initial experiences of this nature can help prepare people for
more challenging experiences.
In summary, the noninvasive data governance and DMBOK approaches
have different mental models that incorporate the notion of at ease to dif-
ferent degrees, and, hence, recommend different kinds of practices. Both
of these models offer valuable insights. No single model may be structured
in a way that meets the needs of an organization at all times. Rather than
evaluating models to identify the best one, an organization's model of
data governance can be seen as a dynamic construction that draws upon
diverse sources and integrates them in a way that meets the organiza-
tion's needs. The following section uses DSRP diagramming techniques to
develop such representations.
CONSTRUCTING AND USING AT-EASE MODELS
The AT-EASE model can be adapted to different situations, by incorpo-
rating elements from models such as DMBOK and the non-invasive data
governance model, to create a systemic model that links learning and prob-
lem-solving for specific contexts. In terms of DSRP elements, distinguishing
between elements included and excluded in different data governance
models is the first step in selecting appropriate elements for constructing
an AT-EASE model for a particular environment. The selected elements
must then be organized into systems that facilitate visualization and inter-
pretation of the key relationships and interdependencies in the system. The
selected elements then can be considered from different perspectives over
time to support adaptive data governance.
Constructing an AT-EASE Model: Noninvasive Data Governance
This section shows how the AT-EASE model can be applied to the non-
invasive governance approach. This example was selected because of its
focus on implementing data governance in an incremental and nonthreat-
ening way. The DSRP diagram in Fi g u r e   7. 3 shows an AT-EASE model
for noninvasive data governance. The following conventions are used in
preparing these diagrams consistently:
Make Distinctions: Choose the stakeholders (e.g., operational data
stewards and data steward coordinators) to be included in a particular
