The month of roses and early summer produce makes May a perfect time to travel,
especially for walkers. The weather is warm but not too hot and prices throughout the
south are good value. It's also patron-saint season.
Festa di San Gennaro
As patron-saint days go, Naples' Festa di San Gennaro has a lot riding on it, namely secur-
ing the city from volcanic disaster. The faithful gather in the cathedral to see San Gennaro's
blood liquefy. If it does, the city is safe. Repeat performances take place on 19 September
and 16 December.
