) Tokyo Station
& Kudan Kaikan
Part Western, but with a
temple-like roof, the Kudan
Kaikan is a mélange of architec-
tural styles. Like many Japanese
buildings created in the 1930s,
it reflects a yearning to return to
a more traditional national style
of architecture, with a lingering
fondness for Western styles,
such as Art Deco. d Map L1 • 1-6-5

Threatened with demolition
on many occasions, the Tokyo
Station building has survived due
to the relentless efforts of preser-
vation groups over the years.
Its future now seems assured.
Designed by Tatsuno Kingo, the
1914 structure is faced with loc-
ally made bricks and reinforced
with steel shipped from Britain
and the United States (see p67) .
* Ministry of Justice
Building
Although this building
is not open to the
public, its exterior,
well-renovated in the
1990s, is worth a look.
A German company,
Ende and Bockman,
designed this 1895
redbrick structure in
a style that mixes
formal elegance with
functionality. d Map L4
