examples). In these networks, pairs of hub-incoming and hub-outgoing intercon-
nected flights serve particular origin/destination passenger flows. Under conditions
when it is possible to replace some cheap short-haul feeder flights by the equivalent
HSR feeder services, it is said that 'complementarity by substitution' takes place. In
depending upon the development of HSR infrastructure at airports, and the mutual
conectivity of airports by HSR lines, various network complementarity schemes can
be established. Some of them are shown in Figure 8.7 (ITA, 1991; EC, 1998b).
