housing a gallery and performance space, but the San Lorenzo does. Next to the wall of
Poppi's castle, this arty B&B offers nine smallish rooms with tiled floors and frescoed or
beamed ceilings. There's a terraced garden with wonderful views, and a light and airy
breakfast room.
The owners, who are German, can organise gastronomic tours of the region.

rounded by corn fields and an orchard, this old stone manor house outside Poppi offers six
double rooms and two self-catering apartments. It's an attractive proposition in summer,
when guests make the most of the large swimming pool, outdoor pizza-oven and expans-
ive views, but it can be bleak in the colder weather.

was once home to Camaldoli monks, this gorgeous country hotel is the best accommoda-
tion option in the Casentino. A mere five-minute drive from Poppi, it offers self-contained
apartments and a wealth of facilities, including two swimming pools, a little wellness
centre with sauna and jacuzzi (€15), tennis court, childrens' playground and sculpture-
filled gardens.
