) Charming host Elisa supervised the restoration of this 13th-century building and
will happily recount its history (it's been owned by her family for generations). The seven
rooms are clean and well maintained, with comfortable beds, painted ceilings and tiled
floors. There's also a tiny lounge where you can relax over complimentary Vin Santo and
cantucci (hard, sweet almond biscuits).
Note that reception has limited core hours (8am to 1pm), so you should arrange the
time of your arrival in advance.

the nearby city gate, this well-located B&B has loads of character and a real 'home away
from home' feel. Run by an elderly couple, it offers three rooms (two with air-con) and a
small breakfast room on the first floor of a rebuilt 12th-century tower house.

a well-run business could easily cite the Athena. Operated by the Bianciardi family for the
past four decades, it's clean, comfortable, meticulously maintained and friendly. The de-
luxe countryside rooms are knockouts (well worth the price) and the summertime terrace
bar and restaurant is the stuff of which lasting holiday memories are made.
Standard rooms on the lower floors are not nearly as attractive as the superior and de-
luxe versions upstairs, but they are considerably cheaper - check the website for deals.
On-site parking is free and easy to access.

Pros: this is a welcoming, family-run hotel with 10 neat rooms and a gorgeous terrace
sporting views across to the duomo and Chiesa di San Domenico. Cons: uncomfortable
beds and the fact that only two room s - the single and triple - have air-con. Breakfast
costs €3 to €7.50, rates are negotiable in winter and payment is cash only.
