Key Facts about Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome
1. MetS is the name for a group of risk factors that increase an individual's
chance of developing CHD, CVD, diabetes and stroke.
2. h e diagnosis of MetS is made when an individual has any three out of
the i ve following risk factors: a large waistline, a higher than normal
triglyceride level, a lower than normal level of HDL-cholesterol, a higher
than normal blood pressure and a higher than normal fasting blood
glucose.
3. An adult with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered to be obese.
4. A number of underlying mechanisms have been proposed for the
development of MetS and include insulin resistance and inl ammatory
mechanisms.
