Palio Dei Normanni
Piazza Armerina bursts into life on 13 and 14 August for its great annual event - a medi-
eval pageant celebrating Count Roger's capture of the town from the Moors in 1087.
Events kick off on the 13th with costumed parades and a reenactment of Count Roger be-
ing presented with the city keys.
The highlight on the 14th is the great joust, known as the quintana , between the four
districts of the city - Monte, Canali, Castellina and Casalotto. At the end of the day the
winning district is presented with a standard depicting Our Lady of the Victories.

TRATTORIA
( 093 568 01 53; Via G Mazzini 27; meals €23; Tue-Sun) Don't let the stark white lights and
bland decor put you off, this popular trattoria serves excellent value-for-money food. An-
tipasti are of the ham, cheese and grilled veg variety, while pastas are paired with earthy
sauces of porcini mushrooms or ripe local vegetables. Main courses are similarly unpre-
tentious with peppered grilled steak a menu mainstay.
Service is friendly and the laid-back atmosphere conducive to a nice, relaxed meal.

( 093 568 35 41; Largo Capodarso 5; pizzas from €4.50, meals €25-30; Fri-Wed) With its exposed stone
walls, low wooden ceiling, wine racks and wood-fired pizza oven, this friendly trattoria
perfectly looks the part. It's not just looks, though - the food is spot on. The pizzas are
great - locals come here for takeaway - and the pastas hale and hearty.
Special mention should also go to the antipasto della casa, a fabulous platter of frittata,
sliced pancetta, cheese, caponata, and ricotta with balsamic vinegar.
