This fabulous
Sicilian-Slovak-run eatery near the Giardini Iblei serves an amazing four-course fixed-

able, as are the seasonally changing specials scribbled on the blackboard up front. Slovak-
inspired offerings such as goulash and apple strudel round out a menu of Sicilian classics.

; Piazza Duomo 20; ice cream from €2; 10am-midnight)
This excep-
tional
gelateria
makes wine-flavoured ice creams like marsala and muscat, plus uncon-
ventional offerings including rose, fennel, wild mint and the surprisingly tasty
gocce
verdi
, made with local olive oil.
Cucina e Vino
( 093 268 64 47; Via Orfanotrofio 91; meals €33; Thu-Tue)
Whether sitting outside in the shadow
of the 18th-century Palazzo Battaglia or inside in the white barrel-vaulted interior, this is a
lovely place to eat. The menu - in fact there are two, one for fish and one for meat - is
more ambitious than most in this price bracket, with adventurous antipasti and unusual
mains such as
cernia
(grouper) served with onion marmalade.
Friendly service and a decent wine list round off the evening. It's Slow Food recom-
mended.
