OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
STROMBOLI'S SLEEPIER SIDE
To see Stromboli's less touristy side, hop off the ferry at
Ginostra
, a tiny village on the island's western shore.
There are only 30 year-round residents here, but you can sleep overnight at
B&B Luna Rossa
(
090 988 00
49;
www.ginostra-stromboli.it/bed-breakfast.php
; r per person from €20) and eat at
L'Incontro
(
090 981 23
05;
www.ginostraincontro.it
; meals €25-30) , which also rents out simple rooms.
It's possible to climb from Ginostra to Stromboli's crater, but this is a physically demanding approach and
you'll need a private guide, making it more costly than the standard tourist trek. At the time of research, Mag-
matrek (

) was also contemplating the possibility of starting regular tours from the Ginostra side - con-
tact them for up-to-the-minute details.
Siremar (

) runs occasional boats from Stromboli's main port to Ginostra (€7.80, 10 minutes). Outside
peak summer season (mid-June to mid-September), you can also get here by Ustica Lines (

) hydrofoil
from any of the surrounding islands, including Lipari (€16.80, 1½ hours) and Panarea (€10.40, 20 minutes).
