Easter Celebrations
Heartfelt and theatrical, Lipari's traditional Easter celebrations kick off on Palm Sunday
with the
Via Crucis
, a costumed candlelit procession from Piazza Mazzini up to the citadel,
culminating in a reenactment of the crucifixion. The mood is similarly sombre on Good
Friday, when groups of barefoot penitents accompany statues of Christ around town in an
atmosphere of funereal silence.
Easter Day is more light-hearted, with two processions, one headed by the resurrected
Jesus and the other by the Virgin Mary, meeting in Marina Corta to fireworks and noisy
rejoicing.

Eating
The waters of the archipelago abound with fish, including tuna, mullet, cuttlefish and sole,
all of which end up on restaurant tables. Swordfish is a particular favourite, although
you'll only find fresh swordfish between May and July; outside of that period it will al-
most certainly be frozen. Another island staple is
pasta all'eoliana
, a simple blend of
capers, olive oil and basil. The local wine is Malvasia, which has a DOC
(Denominazione
di origine controllata)
accreditation and a sweet taste of honey.
Many restaurants close during the winter season between late October and Easter.

This rather
touristy place near Marina Corta is a convenient spot to pick up sandwiches for a day of
hiking or beach-hopping. There are over two dozen varieties on the menu, with Sicilian
ingredients like capers, olives, eggplant and tuna making frequent appearances. Uncon-
ventional hours also make it a good choice for a mid-afternoon snack or glass of wine.

gences is a cake from this famous
pasticceria
(pastry shop). In business since 1930, the
main shop fronts Via Vittorio Emanuele but behind is a lovely outdoor seating area where
you can linger over a coffee and fabulous pastries and cakes.
