Sustainable Initiatives
The first Smart City Expo and World Congress was held in Barcelona in 2011 to discuss
urban planning, the environment and other increasingly important urban issues. Barcelona
was chosen as the host city because of intelligent strategies in the urban landscape. Since
2000, the city has required all new buildings to install solar panels to provide most of their
hot water. Its massive solar panel near the Parc del Fòrum is the largest of any European
city. Catalonia also announced plans to quintuple wind capacity by 2020.
Barcelona's shared bike program, Bicing, which was launched in 2007, has helped re-
duce traffic on the road.
