( 93 553 51 40; Passeig de l'Exposició 85; mains €10-20; Wed-Mon; Paral·lel) Xemei
('twins' in Venetian, because it is run by a pair of twins from Italy's lagoon city) is a won-
derful slice of Venice in Barcelona. To the accompaniment of gentle jazz, you might try an
entrée of mixed cicheti (Venetian seafood tapas), followed with bigoi in salsa veneziana
(thick spaghetti in an anchovy and onion sauce).

Canarian
( 934 42 30 80; www.barramon.es ; Carrer de Blai 28; mains €6-14; Paral.lel) On the lively Car-
rer de Blai, Barramòn is a great little bar that serves Canarian food and is a bit rock and
roll at the same time. Try the Ropa Vieja (an infinitely more flavoursome version of its
eponymous Cuban cousin), a wonderful stew of chickpeas and shredded pork; papas ar-
rugadas (baked new potatoes with a spicy sauce); and almogrote (cured cheese topped
with olive oil, garlic and red pepper).

Catalan
(Carrer de la Concòrdia 21; mains €8-10; dinner Mon-Sat; Poble Sec) For decades this former
wine store has been dishing out dinner to often raucous groups. Traditional Catalan cook-
ing is the name of the game. Surrounded by aged wine barrels, take your place at old
tables and benches and perhaps order the conejo a la jumillana (fried rabbit served with
garlic, onion, bay leaves, rosemary, mint, thyme and oregano).

Pizza
( 93 442 50 56; www.bellanapoli.net ; Carrer de Margarit 14; pizzas €7-21; lunch & dinner daily;
Paral.lel) There are pizza joints all over Barcelona. And then there's the real thing: the way
they make it in Naples. This place even feels like Naples. The waiters are mostly from
across the Med and have that cheeky southern Italian approach to food, customers and
everything else.
