In-Depth Information
Bijagua
Bijagua is the only sizable town in the Tenorio sphere. It has a few hotels, a Banco Na-
cional ATM and several small sodas and bars, but no gasoline; the nearest gas pumps are
in Upala or Cañas.
Most of the accommodations and a few restaurants are along the main highway.
Sleeping & Eating
Hotel Cacao HOTEL
( 2466-8052; www.hotelcacaocr.com ; dm/s/d/q US$14/30/40/80; )
The best budget option in town is located 300m northwest of the main highway. Set in a
yellow concrete building, spacious rooms have new tiles and wooden beds. There is plenty
of deck seating with lovely views of Volcán Miravalles. Follow the trail along the river to
cool off in the local swimming hole.
Cataratas Bijagua Lodge BUNGALOW
( 8937-4687; www.cataratasbijagua.com ; d/tr/q incl breakfast US$70/85/100; )
Owners Warner and Carla turned their family's dairy farm into a beautiful ecolodge. Now,
five rustic cabins are set on gorgeous jungle grounds, with views of both Tenorio and
Miravalles. The grounds - filled with wildlife - are ripe for exploring, with a river trail
leading to a private waterfall. The place operates on power from a hydroelectric generator.
It's located 2km west of Bijagua: look for the turnoff near the Casita del Maiz. Warner
and Carla don't speak much English, so brush up on your Spanish.
Casitas Tenorio BUNGALOW
( 8312-1248; www.casitastenorio.com ; d incl breakfast US$65; )
This is a sweet family-run farm with a few casitas and room for camping. The casitas are
simple, spacious and clean, and surrounded by wildlife. Owners Donald and Pip are com-
mitted to community rural tourism, and the charm of this place is experiencing life on the
farm, visiting the animals and exploring the fruit tree-laden grounds. Your breakfast
comes straight from the chickens!
