BUS
Bus stops are scattered around town.
Orosi (Autotransportes Mata Irola) US$0.95, 40 minutes, departs every 20 minutes
between 5:30am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, from Calle 3 between Avs 2 and 4.
San José (Lumaca) US$1.15, 55 minutes, departs every 15 minutes between 5am and
midnight, from the terminal on Calle 6 between Avs 3 and 5.
Turrialba (Transtusa) US$1.65, 1½ hours, departs every 45 minutes from 6am to 10pm
weekdays, less frequently on weekends, from Av 4 between Calles 5 and 7.
TRAIN
Train service was reinstated in late 2013 between San José's Estación del Pacífico and
Cartago's downtown station (Av 3 btwn Calles 4 & 6) . The 40-minute trip costs US$1.10.
Trains run Monday to Friday only, with a schedule weighted towards morning and after-
noon commute hours.
Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú
Looming on the horizon 19km (as the crow flies) northeast of Cartago, Irazú, which de-
rives its name from the indigenous word ara-tzu (thunder-point), is the largest and highest
(3432m) active volcano in Costa Rica. In 1723 the Spanish governor of the area, Diego de
la Haya Fernández, watched helplessly as the volcano unleashed its destruction on the city
