A NATURAL EDUCATION
Immerse yourself in the Central Valley's rural culture with a stay at Finca La Flor de
Paraíso ( 2534-8003; www.la-flor.org ; ) outside Cartago. This not-for-profit organic
farm operated by the Association for the Development of Environmental and Human
Consciousness (Asodecah) has a recommended volunteer-work program that will allow
you to get your hands dirty on projects related to agriculture, reforestation, animal hus-
bandry and medicinal-herb cultivation. There is also an onsite Spanish school.
The cost of the volunteer-work programs, including room and board (in simple wood
cabinasand dormitories), is US$28 daily. Vacationers can arrange guided visits (per per-
son US$10) or overnight stays (per person with breakfast US$35, with three meals
US$50). Family rates are available; advance reservations necessary.
Sleeping & Eating
Cartago works well as a day trip from San José or Orosi, as attractive lodging options here
are limited. For an atmospheric, authentically local eating experience, pull up a seat at one
of the sodas inside the Mercado Central, or browse the aisles for fresh produce. You'll also
find plenty of bakeries and other eateries along Avs 0 and 1 in the heart of town.
