Built on the herring trade, Lerwick is Shetland's only real town, home to a third of the is-
lands' population and dug into the hills overlooking Bressay Sound. It has a solidly mari-
time feel, with aquiline oilboats competing for space in the superb natural harbour with
the dwindling fishing fleet. The water's clear blue tones makes wandering along atmo-
spheric Commercial St a delight, and the excellent museum provides all the cultural back-
ground.
