ONLINE SHETLAND
The excellent website www.visit.shetland.org has good info on accommodation, activities, and more.
Getting Around
Air
Interisland flights are operated by DirectFlight ( 01595-840246;
www.directflight.co.uk ) , and depart from Tingwall airport, 6.5 miles northwest of Ler-
wick.
Boat
Ferry services link Mainland to the various inhabited islands, mostly run by Shetland Is-
lands Council ( www.shetland.gov.uk/ferries ) .
Bicycle
You can hire bikes from several places, including Grantfield Garage ( Click here ) (per
day/week £12.50/50) in Lerwick.
Bus
An extensive network of bus services radiate from Lerwick's Viking bus station (
01595-694100; Commercial Rd) to all corners of Mainland, and on (via ferry) to the is-
lands of Yell and Unst. Schedules aren't great for day tripping from Lerwick.
Car & Motorcycle
Shetland's broad, well-made roads (think 'oil money') seem like motorways after
Orkney's winding lanes. Car hire is fuss-free, and they'll bring your vehicle to whatever
transport terminal you arrive at. Prices start at around £20/110 for a day/week but are
more usually around £30 a day.
Bolts Car Hire ( 01595-693636; www.boltscarhire.co.uk ; 26 North Rd, Lerwick) Also
has an office at Sumburgh airport.
Grantfield Garage ( 01595-692709; www.grantfieldgarage.co.uk ; North Rd, Lerwick)
The cheapest. A short walk towards town from the Lerwick ferry.
