In-Depth Information
( 01854-612366; www.ferryboat-inn.com ; Shore St; mains £11-14) Known as the FBI,
this character-laden waterfront inn is a little less traditional looking these days with its
bleached wood and nonstained carpet, but it's still the place where locals and visitors
mingle. Some dishes on the menu are a little bland, but a well-run dining room, quality in-
gredients and great presentation compensate.
Arch Inn££
( 01854-612454; www.thearchinn.co.uk ; West Shore St; mains £8-13; ) There's
pleasing pub food to be had at this shorefront establishment, where the cosy bar and res-
taurant area dishes up generously proportioned stews, steaks and fish and chips, as well as
a couple of more advanced seafood plates. The outdoor tables right beside the lapping wa-
ter are a top spot for a pint.

Getting There & Around
Citylink ( www.citylink.co.uk ) has one to three daily buses from Inverness to Ullapool
(£11.90, 1½ hours), connecting with the Lewis ferry.
Ullapool to Kyle of Lochalsh
Although it's less than 50 miles as the crow flies from Ullapool to Kyle of Lochalsh, it's
more like 150 miles along the circuitous coastal road - but don't let that put you off. It's a
deliciously remote region and there are fine views of beaches and bays backed by moun-
tains all the way along.
If you're in a hurry to get to Skye, head inland on the A835 (towards Inverness) and
catch up with the A832 further south, near Garve.
