In-Depth Information
Thurso's idyllic country Riverside Walk (Riverside) will make you feel miles away
from town. It's a beautiful walk, taking about 45 minutes at a stroll, and is a very popular
local pursuit in decent weather. You can also walk all the way to Scrabster (40 minutes)
along cliffs for brilliant views. Take care in windy weather.

B&B
Pennyland House££
( 01847-891194; www.pennylandhouse.co.uk ; s/d £60/70; ) A super conversion of
an historic house once lived in by the founder of the Boys' Brigade, this is Thurso's
standout B&B choice. It offers phenomenal value for this level of accommodation, with
huge rooms named after golf courses: we especially loved St Andrews - so spacious, with
a great chessboard-tiled bathroom. The hospitality is enthusiastic and most helpful, and
there's an inviting breakfast space and terraced area with views over the water to Hoy.
Forss House Hotel££
( 01847-861201; www.forsshousehotel.co.uk ; Forss; s/d/superior d £97/130/165;
) Tucked into a thicket of trees 4 miles west of Thurso is an old Georgian mansion of-
fering elegant accommodation that has both character and style. Sumptuous upstairs
rooms are preferable to basement rooms as they have lovely views of the garden. There
are also separate, beautifully appointed suites in the garden itself, which provide both pri-
vacy and a sense of tranquillity. Thoughtful extras like a selection of CDs and books in
every room add appeal. It's right alongside a beautiful salmon river - the hotel can sort
out permits and equipment - and if you've had a chilly day in the waders, some 300 malt
whiskies await in the hotel bar.
