Sleeping & Eating
Kirkcudbright has a swathe of good B&Bs, though single rooms are scarce. The Kirkcud-
bright Bay Hotel ( 01557-339544; www.kirkcudbrightbay.com ; 25 St Cuthbert St) was
getting a much-needed facelift by enthusiastic new owners when we last passed by, so
should be worth checking out as a sleeping and eating option.

) What a haven of good hospitality this is. Superior rooms are excellent - wood fur-
nishings and views over the back garden give them a rustic appeal. The bistro (mains
£11-18) serves pricey but tasty pub nosh - the fish and chips come wrapped in the hotel
newsletter - and the restaurant, Artistas , serves similar fare in a more refined atmosphere.
Staff are happy to be there, and you will be too.

inclined should snap up the one double room in this lovely place, which has both historic
and current painterly connections.

Right by the castle, this tasteful spot offers high-end B&B with two very smart rooms, one
with a great view of the fortress itself. In keeping with the town's artistic nature, there's a
fine variety of canvases and watercolours on the walls. Solicitous hosts prepare great
breakfasts and are happy to advise about walks in the area.
