25 Anslinger was called the 'MacCarthy of hemp'. After his work in the USA, where he was Assistant
Commissioner in the Bureau of Prohibition and subsequently First Commissioner of the Treasury's Federal
Bureau of Narcotics (now the DEA), he became the international figurehead of the fight against narcotics,
and cannabis in particular, as US representative to the United Nations Narcotics Commission. He resigned
on 20 May 1962.
