In-Depth Information
Free Wireless Internet
Unlike many countries, where free connections aren't hard to come by, you'll have to try a
little harder for a cheap hook-up here. McDonald's, Starbucks and public libraries are a
good bet, along with some shopping centres, cafes and bars.
Significant Structures
Many of Sydney's most beautiful old buildings are open to the public, including the Cus-
toms House ( CLICK HERE ), the Mint ( CLICK HERE ), the State Library ( CLICK HERE ), Govern-
ment House ( CLICK HERE ) and the Town Hall ( CLICK HERE ) . For added entertainment, visit
Parliament House ( CLICK HERE ) on sitting days. Window-shoppers can get free thrills per-
using the exquisite Queen Victoria Building ( CLICK HERE ) and the Strand Arcade ( CLICK
HERE ) . And then, of course, there are the churches: St Mary's Cathedral ( CLICK HERE ), St
James' Church ( CLICK HERE ) and St Andrew's Cathedral ( CLICK HERE ) being the best of
them.
While you can't just go traipsing through the Opera House ( CLICK HERE ) if you're not
on a tour or watching a performance, you can scramble all over it. Then you can walk
over that other great icon of the city, the Sydney Harbour Bridge ( CLICK HERE ), and
wander through the sinister clown gate of Luna Park ( CLICK HERE ; entry is free, rides are
charged).
Cheap Alternatives
For views, put on some snazzy threads and zip up to Blu Bar ( CLICK HERE ), on the 36th
floor of the Shangri-La hotel, or Orbit ( CLICK HERE ), on the 47th floor of the Australia
Square tower (Orbit has the advantage of rotating). They're not cheap bars but a cocktail
will cost less than the price of visiting Sydney Tower.
Rather than booking an expensive harbour cruise, grab a ferry to Manly to explore the
outer harbour and a Parramatta River service to head upstream.
