In-Depth Information
While they're only completely free to the most hard-hearted, both I'm Free ( CLICK HERE
) and Peek Tours ( CLICK HERE ) offer three-hour walking tours of the inner city, which the
enthusiastic guides work for tips.
Free Classical Music
Lunchtime is the right time to enjoy the talent of classical musicians for nothing - particu-
larly Wednesday lunchtime, it seems. The Sydney Conservatorium of Music ( CLICK HERE ),
St James' Church near Hyde Park and St Andrew's Cathedral all offer regular Wednesday
concerts. St Andrew's also has lunchtime performances on Mondays and Fridays, and the
Town Hall has lunchtime organ recitals monthly. Both the city's cathedrals (St Andrew's
and St Mary's) have excellent choirs and organists, which can be heard performing at se-
lected services.
Free Pub Entertainment
On any given night of the week you can catch a band for the price of a drink at any of
dozens of pubs around the city. Of course, things ramp up towards the weekend. There are
too many to list here (we've flagged the best options in the Drinking & Nightlife sections
of our neighbourhood chapters), but hot spots include The Rocks, the city centre, Darling
Harbour, Newtown, Annandale, Balmain, Surry Hills and Kings Cross. Plenty of pubs
also enlist DJs on the weekends, blurring the line between pub and club but with the ad-
ded advantage of having no cover charge (usually).
Pub quiz is a tried and true tactic to get punters through the doors midweek, while some
establishments offer more unusual incentives (life-drawing classes, crab races, poker or
snooker comps, comedy, drag shows and the like).
Free Bus
Jump on bus 555 for a free loop around the inner city.
