Northern Beaches
Explore
For surf fiends and Home & Away devotees, the Northern Beaches are a must-see. Al-
though we've listed them as a day trip (that's most likely how you'll approach them),
they're very much a part of the city, with the suburbs pushing right up to the water's edge.
Some neighbourhoods are more ritzy than others, but what they all have in common is a
devotion to the beach. Consider hiring a car to beach-bum at your leisure. We've arranged
our listings as you'll reach them, driving north. Palm Beach, the farthest flung, is the least
built up and the best. From here it's a quick hop by ferry across Pittwater to untamed Ku-
ring-gai Chase National Park.

Top Tip
The patrolled ocean beaches are good for swimming, but sharks make Pittwater and
Broken Bay risky unless you head to the netted areas at Illawong Bay and The Basin.
Getting There & Away
» Car Driving is by far the best way to explore this stretch. From the city, take the bridge
or tunnel north and exit at Military Rd. Continue on to Spit Rd and keep heading straight
ahead after crossing the Spit Bridge. This eventually becomes Pittwater Rd, which reaches
the coast at Dee Why.
