your co- diners at the long communal table - chances are they'll be too absorbed by the
taste synapses firing inside their brains to notice.

Kings Cross) It's not near the water and it looks like an old deep-fry takeaway, but this
tiled, triangular, sardine-sized eatery is among the best fish restaurants in Sydney. The kit-
chen consumes most of the room - stools and benches are an afterthought.

Sydney adores Bill Granger (aka Mr Scrambled Egg) and his original sunny eatery with
its newspaper-strewn communal table. Dishes such as sweet-corn fritters served with roast
tomato, spinach and bacon are equally adorable. Can't get a seat? Head for bills in Surry

(13b Burton St; breakfast $10-18, lunch $5-11, dinner $15-19; breakfast, lunch & dinner; Museum) Equal
parts cafe and cocktail bar, 13b is a glammed-up space with dark walls and lots of mirrors.
We prefer its breakfast incarnation: avocado mash, truffled eggs and heart-jolting coffee.
At lunchtime it shifts into mini-burger and sandwich territory, while night-time is tipple-
time, with platters and pasta to soak it up.
CAFE
DON DON$
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
( 9331 3544; 80 Oxford St; mains $10-14; lunch & dinner Mon-Fri; Museum) For years we've
thumbed our way through diminutive Don Don's photo menu, discovering consistently
delicious dishes. Expect everything from katsudon (rice with deep-fried chicken, beef or
pork, egg and condiments) to sashimi, mostly served with rice, miso and Japanese pickles
on the side. Be prepared to queue.
JAPANESE
TEN BUCK ALLEY$

pays homage to the back laneway, once a notorious hang-out for transsexual prostitutes.
