In a
place so clean even the apples on reception look valuable, you're rarely going to be disap-
pointed. Romantics can be forgiven for having visions of Casanova (he once stayed here)
in the sharp modernist rooms with their mosaic bathrooms and white dressing gowns.
Downstairs, an exquisite breakfast buffet can be enjoyed while the kids run riot with the
complementary table football.

Slick
modern furnishings in the ancient centre a mere arrow-shot from the castle, the Ferrara is
what design gurus would call 'contemporary' - ie accented colours, minimalist lines, up-
to-the-minute electronics, and lots of glass and shiny surfaces. But any pretensions are
cancelled out by genuine good service and value-for-money rates. The hotel also has 10
apartment suites from €160.

Eating
Like all Emilian cities Ferrara has its gastronomic nuances. Don't leave town without try-
ing
cappellacci di zucca,
a hat-shaped pasta pouch filled with pumpkin and herbs, and
brushed with sage and butter. Delicious!
Salama da sugo
is a stewed pork sausage, while
pasticcio di maccheroni
is an oven-baked macaroni pie topped with Parmesan. Even Fer-
rarese bread is distinctive, shaped into a crunchy twisted knot.
