( 059 21 03 03; www.hotelsangeminiano.it ; Viale Moreali 41; s/d €60/80; ) Geminiano's
slightly off-centre location and dark, unspectacular rooms are saved by steady-Eddie ser-
vice and a salt-of-the-earth restaurant next door, which serves shockingly economical piz-
zas (€4.50), and pesto sauce that tastes like it's been dug straight out of the Emiliano soil.

jacent to intimate Piazza Grande is complemented by quasi-boutique facilities, clean,
modern bathrooms and the latest in TV technology. Fruity breakfasts and wi-fi are in-
cluded; garage parking (€12) isn't.

Eating
Modena would easily make a top-10 list of best Italian culinary towns. The beauty lies not
just in the food, but in the way it is unpretentiously presented in nondescript restaurants
up blind alleys or hidden inside office blocks, often without signage.
