Rebuilt in the mid-16th century after an earthquake in 1511, Udine's castle affords rare
with a handful of works by Caravaggio (a portrait of St Francis in room 7) and Tiepolo
(several works in room 10). The bulk of the collection is dedicated to lesser-known Friuli-
an painters and religious sculpture.

A small but engaging museum of daily life, with various exhibitions devoted to the Friuli-
an hearth, unusual spiritual practices, folk medicine and dress. The building itself features
intricate 19th-century woodwork, with carved Friulian forest scenes, and its own little
canal gurgling by the entrance.
Sleeping
Central Udine has a number of small, smart midrange hotels, but only one notable budget
place. If you're driving, consider a B&B or farm stay in the surrounding suburbs or coun-
tryside. The tourist office has online listings.

This is a rare budget find and you'll be greeted by the caring, knowledgable owner. The
B&B occupies a bright top-floor apartment and and has colourful, cutely decorated rooms,
mosaic-tiled bathrooms, a full kitchen with DIY breakfast supplies and self-catering facil-
ities. One room is en suite, while the other four rooms share two (spotless) bathrooms.
