box office 9am-5pm Mon-Sat, 9am-1.30pm Sun; Repubblica)
Built in 1880, the plush and gilt in-
terior of Rome's premier opera house is a stunning surprise after the Fascist-era exterior
(which was revamped in the 1920s). This theatre has an impressive history: it premiered
Puccini's
Tosca
and Maria Callas once sang here. Contemporary productions don't always
match the splendour of the setting, but you may get lucky.

Small and intimate, Rome's top jazz joint attracts top Italian and in-
ternational performers and a respectful, cosmopolitan crowd. Book a table if you want to
dine to the tunes.

In the middle of a park in the southern suburbs, the Casa del Jazz is housed in a
villa that once belonged to a Mafia boss. When he was caught, the Comune di Roma
(Rome Council) confiscated it and converted it into a jazz-fuelled complex, with a
150-seat auditorium, rehearsal rooms, cafe and restaurant. Some events are free.
