When to Go
The best times to visit Italy with young travel companions are April to June and September
- temperatures are mild to warm, most hotels and restaurants in coastal holiday areas are
open, and tourist numbers are manageable meaning shorter queues and less-irritable little
ones.
In July and August prices soar and the country broils. In the Alps, winters are long and
severe, but perfect for skiing with many resorts offering family-tailored activities. Else-
where, winters range from dull and rainy (in Milan) to relatively mild (in Rome and further
south). Sicily has long summers and short winters , making it a sound choice for coastal
family fun.
Where to Stay
Hostels and apartments are sound options for families, offering multibed rooms, guest kit-
chens, lounge facilities and, in many cases, washing machines. In summer (July and
August), camping grounds are buzzing, many offering activities for youngsters. Italy's ag-
riturismi are great for fresh air, space and extra perks like animals or a swimming pool.
Book accommodation in advance whenever possible. In hotels, some double rooms can't
accommodate an extra bed for kids, so check ahead. If the child is small enough to share
your bed, some hoteliers will let you do this for free. The website www.booking.com speci-
fies the 'kid policy' for every hotel listed and any extra charges incurred.
