Some of Switzerland's best Old Towns are in this region
(think Bern and Murten to start) along with some of the
best local foods (think chocolate and cheese). These two
tours give you a chance to savour both.
BERN TO GRUYÈRES
History & Cheese
Start, naturally enough, in Switzerland's capital, the surprisingly urbane and enticing

Bern
. Wander the
Old Town
and check out the namesake bears in the
Bärenpark
.
Retrace the steps of Albert Einstein and visit the
Einstein Haus
where he showed a few
hints of future fame while working as a clerk.
A quick train ride and you are in
(2) Murten
. Europe used to be filled with these tiny
medieval towns surrounded by evocative defensive walls, but no longer. Murten is a rare
surviving example and you can spend half a day happily exploring its stone walls.
Stop in
(3) Fribourg
and listen for French spoken on one side of town and German on
the other. While its wall is long gone, its 12th-century
Old Town
survives and is good for
