In-Depth Information
This granite sarcophagus from around 650 BC holds great mystery and intrigue for vis-
itors of all ages. Perhaps it's a good thing that the occupant is long gone considering
the items that visitors have 'posted' through the gap over the years: ticket stubs from
past exhibitions and a 1970s Playboy magazine, to name just a few.
5 SCOTTISH IDENTITY IN ART
Paintings of historic heroes such as William Wallace, together with the rugged land-
scapes and majestic stags beloved by Victorian artists, have all been used to define
'Scottishness'. More controversially, there's an image of Robert Burns as Che
Guevara, and a caricature of the modern, kilt-wearing Scotsman with a can of beer and
a football for a head.
