Kelvingrove Don't Miss List
DR NEIL BALLANTYNE, MUSEUM MANAGER, KELVINGROVE
1 SALVADOR DALÍ'S CHRIST OF ST JOHN OF THE CROSS
One of our most controversial purchases ever, Christ of St John of the Cross has be-
come as iconic as Kelvingrove itself. The painting was proclaimed an outrageous
waste of money and in its time has been attacked twice. It is now one of our most val-
ued treasures.
2 CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH AND THE GLASGOW STYLE
The 'Glasgow Style' describes the distinctive form of decorative art produced by Glas-
gow designers between 1890 and 1920. This gallery contains some fabulous jewellery,
stained glass and furniture. My favourite object is the Wassail, a large gesso wall frieze
from the Ingram Street Tearooms, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
3 THE PEMBROKE ARMOUR
Dating back to 1557, this is the only complete set of Greenwich armour for man and
horse in existence. The rarity of this magnificent exhibit demonstrates the passion of
the man behind the collection - RL Scott built up one of the finest collections of
European arms and armour in the world. A little-known fact is that he preferred to col-
lect equipment that had actually been used in battle, rather than merely decorative ar-
mour or display pieces.
